How to replace Timing Chain on Buick Rendezvous?

The details to replace Timing Chain & Sprockets is as follows:----

Details for 3.4L engine, 3.5L Engine & 3.6L Engine.


Timing Chain & Sprockets
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
3.4L & 3.5L Engines

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks are aligned in the following locations:

    Camshaft alignment pin (1)
    Timing chain damper (2) to the crankshaft sprocket (3)
    Crankshaft key (4)
    Timing chain damper (5) to the camshaft sprocket locator hole (6)

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Camshaft sprocket bolt
    Timing chain, timing chain sprockets and damper
    Front oil seal

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    New front oil seal by making certain the seal is fully seated
    Timing chain damper. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    Timing chain to the camshaft sprocket
    Crankshaft sprocket
    Timing chain to the crankshaft sprocket by making certain the chain is fully seated
  2. Align the crankshaft timing mark to the bottom mark on the damper.
  3. Align the timing mark on the camshaft gear center line of the locator hole with the timing mark on the top of the damper.
  4. Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket.
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft sprocket bolt. Torque the bolt to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
3.6L Engine
  1. Using tool EN 46111 , rotate the crankshaft until the left cylinder head camshafts align with tool EN 46105-2 and the right cylinder head camshafts align with tool EN 46105-1.
  2. Install tool EN 46105-1 to the right camshafts.
  3. Install tool EN 46105-2 to the left camshafts.
  4. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts.
  5. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  6. Remove and discard the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  7. Inspect the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the right cylinder head for burrs or any defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  8. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt.
  9. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  10. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts.
  11. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  12. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain from the right camshaft position actuators and the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler sprocket.
  13. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts.
  14. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  15. Remove and discard the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  16. Inspect the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the engine block for burrs or any defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW primary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  17. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain upper guide bolts.
  18. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain upper guide.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the primary camshaft drive chain lower guide. The primary camshaft drive chain lower guide is not serviceable separately. If the primary camshaft drive chain lower guide must be replaced, the oil pump must be replaced.
  19. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain.
  20. Remove the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler bolt.
  21. Remove the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  22. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts.
  23. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  24. Remove and discard the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  25. Inspect the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the left cylinder head for burrs or any defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  26. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt.
  27. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  28. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts.
  29. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  30. Remove the left secondary camshaft drive chain from the left camshaft position actuators and the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler sprocket.
  31. Remove the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler bolt.
  32. Remove the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  33. Remove the crankshaft sprocket from the nose of the crankshaft.
    NOTE
    Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent engine rotation when loosening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  34. Remove the left exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt.
  35. Remove the left exhaust camshaft position actuator.
    NOTE
    A wrench must be used on the hex of the camshaft when loosening or tightening in order to prevent component damage. Failure to prevent the torque reaction against the timing drive chain can lead to timing drive chain failure.
  36. Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent engine rotation when loosening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  37. Remove the left intake camshaft position actuator bolt.
  38. Remove the left intake camshaft position actuator.
    NOTE
    Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent engine rotation when loosening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  39. Remove the right exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt.
  40. Remove the right exhaust camshaft position actuator.
    NOTE
    Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent engine rotation when loosening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  41. Remove the right intake camshaft position actuator bolt.
  42. Remove the right intake camshaft position actuator.
To install:

  1. Observe the body of the camshaft position actuator for the "IN" marking (3). The marking is for an intake camshaft position actuator.
  2. Ensure the proper timing mark is used. Observe the outer ring of the camshaft position actuator for the "R" and triangle marking (2). The marking is for alignment to the highlighted timing chain link on the right side of the engine.
  3. Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent camshaft rotation when tightening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  4. Install the right intake camshaft position actuator.
  5. Install the camshaft position actuator bolt. Tighten the camshaft position actuator bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  6. Observe the body of the camshaft position actuator for the "EX" marking (1). The marking is for an exhaust camshaft position actuator.
  7. Ensure the proper timing mark is used. Observe the outer ring of the camshaft position actuator for the "R" and triangle marking (2). The marking is for alignment to the highlighted timing chain link on the right side of the engine.
    NOTE
    Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent camshaft rotation when tightening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  8. Install the right exhaust camshaft position actuator.
  9. Install the camshaft position actuator bolt. Tighten the camshaft position actuator bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  10. Observe the body of the camshaft position actuator for the "IN" marking (3). The marking is for an intake camshaft position actuator.
  11. Ensure the proper timing mark is used. Observe the outer ring of the camshaft position actuator for the "L" and circle marking (1). The marking is for alignment to the highlighted timing chain link on the left side of the engine.
    NOTE
    Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent camshaft rotation when tightening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  12. Install the left intake camshaft position actuator.
  13. Install the camshaft position actuator bolt. Tighten the camshaft position actuator bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  14. Observe the body of the camshaft position actuator for the "EX" marking (1). The marking is for an exhaust camshaft position actuator.
  15. Ensure the proper timing mark is used. Observe the outer ring of the camshaft position actuator for the "L" and circle marking (3). The marking is for alignment to the highlighted timing chain link on the left side of the engine.
    NOTE
    Use an open wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent camshaft rotation when tightening the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  16. Install the left exhaust camshaft position actuator.
  17. Install the camshaft position actuator bolt. Tighten the camshaft position actuator bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  18. Ensure the crankshaft sprocket is installed with the timing mark (1) visible. Install the crankshaft sprocket on to the nose of the crankshaft.
  19. Align the notch in the crankshaft sprocket with the pin in the crankshaft.

  20. Slide the crankshaft sprocket on the crankshaft nose until the crankshaft sprocket contacts the step in the crankshaft.
  21. If necessary, align the crankshaft sprocket to the stage one timing drive assembly position using tool EN 46111.

  22. The recessed hub (3) and the larger sprocket of the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler is installed outward. The raised hub and the smaller sprocket of the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler is installed toward the block. Place the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler to the cylinder block.
  23. Install the camshaft intermediate drive chain idler bolt. Tighten the camshaft intermediate drive chain idler bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
    WARNING
    There should be no need to rotate the camshaft more than 10 degrees. Using the hex cast into the camshaft rotate the camshaft in order to install tool EN 46105.
  24. Install tool EN 46105-1 onto the rear of the left camshafts.
    WARNING
    All camshafts must be locked in place before installation of any camshaft drive chains.
  25. Ensure that tool EN 46105-1 is fully seated onto the camshafts.
  26. Ensure that the crankshaft is in the stage one timing drive assembly position using tool EN 46111.
  27. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain.

  28. Place the left secondary camshaft drive chain around the inner sprocket of the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler with the timing camshaft drive chain link (1) aligned to the alignment access hole (2) made in the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler outer sprocket. Wrap the secondary camshaft drive chain around both left actuator drive sprockets.

  32. There will be 18 links (1) between the left camshaft intermediate drive chain idler timing secondary camshaft drive chain link and each left camshaft position actuator sprocket timing secondary camshaft drive chain link.
  33. Position the left secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  34. Install the secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts. Tighten the secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  35. Position the left secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  36. Install the secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt. Tighten the secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

  37. Using tool J 45027 reset the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner plunger.
  38. Install the plunger into the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner body.
  39. Compress the plunger into the body and lock the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner by inserting tool EN 46112 into the access hole in the side of the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner body.
  40. Slowly release pressure on the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner. The left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner should remain compressed.
  41. Install a NEW left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket to the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  42. Install the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts through the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner and gasket.
  43. Ensure the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the left cylinder head does not have any burrs or defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  44. Place the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner into position and loosely install the bolts to the block.

  45. Verify the proper placement of the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket tab (1).

    First Pass: Tighten the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    Final Pass: Tighten the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  46. Release the left secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner by pulling out tool EN 46112 and unlocking the tensioner plunger.
  47. Verify the left secondary camshaft drive chain timing mark alignments (1-6). Ensure that the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler (1) is being installed. The recessed hub (4) and the smaller sprocket of the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler is installed outward. The raised hub and the larger sprocket of the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler is installed toward the block.
  48. Install the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  49. Install the camshaft intermediate drive chain idler bolt. Tighten the camshaft intermediate drive chain idler bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
    NOTE
    Ensure that the crankshaft is in the stage one timing drive assembly position.
  50. Install the primary camshaft drive chain.

  56. Install the primary camshaft drive chain upper guide.
  57. Install the primary camshaft drive chain upper guide bolts. Tighten the primary camshaft drive chain upper guide bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  58. Using tool J 45027 reset the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner plunger.
  59. Install the plunger into the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner body.

  60. Compress the plunger into the body and lock the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner by inserting tool EN 46112 into the access hole in the side of the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner body.
  61. Slowly release pressure on the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner. The primary camshaft drive chain tensioner should remain compressed.
  62. Install a NEW primary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket to the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  63. Install the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts through the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner and gasket.
  64. Ensure the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the engine block does not have any burrs or defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW primary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  65. Place the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner into position and loosely install the bolts to the block.

    First Pass: Tighten the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    Final Pass: Tighten the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  67. Release the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner by pulling out tool EN 46112 and unlocking the tensioner plunger.

  69. Remove tool EN 46105-1 from the rear of the left camshafts.
  70. Using tool EN 46111 rotate the crankshaft and crankshaft sprocket from the stage one alignment position (1) to the stage two alignment position (2), 115 crankshaft degrees, in order to install the right secondary camshaft drive chain components.
  71. Install tool EN 46105-2 onto the rear of the left camshafts.
  72. Install tool EN 46105-1 onto the rear of the right camshafts.
  73. Ensure that the crankshaft is in the stage two timing drive assembly position.
  74. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain.

  75. Place the secondary camshaft drive chain around the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler outer sprocket, aligning the timing camshaft drive chain link (1) with the alignment access hole (2) made in the right camshaft intermediate drive chain idler inner sprocket.
  76. Wrap the secondary camshaft drive chain around both right actuator drive sprockets.

  81. Position the right secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  82. Install the secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts. Tighten the secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  83. Position the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  84. Install the secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt. Tighten the secondary camshaft drive chain shoe bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  85. Using tool J 45027 reset the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner plunger.
  86. Install the plunger into the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner body.
  87. Compress the plunger into the body and lock the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner by inserting tool EN 46112 into the access hole in the side of the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner body.
  88. Slowly release pressure on the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner. The right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner should remain compressed.
  89. Install a NEW right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket to the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  90. Install the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts through the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner and gasket.
  91. Ensure the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the right cylinder head does not have any burrs or defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  92. Place the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner into position and loosely install the bolts to the block.
  93. Verify the proper placement of the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket tab (1).

    First Pass: Tighten the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    Final Pass: Tighten the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  94. Release the right camshaft drive chain tensioner by pulling out tool EN 46112 and unlocking the tensioner plunger.
