Ford Taurus: Ignition Switch & Steering Column Replacing?

In this chapter you will view details and diagrams for replacing Ignition switch,Ignition switch housing,Ignition switch complete assembly,Steering column Assembly,And also details for removing Tilt steering column and Disarming AIRBAG .

Its not very hard to replace ignition switch on Ford Taurus.

Go through the procedure.
It covers all step by step details.

You have to remove lower instrument cover.Once you remove the lower instrument cover under the column. You can now see the switch. Its about 2/3 of the way down the column. It will have a fairly large plug going to it. Swich is located right around the area where column bolts up to dash. 2 screws hold switch on column. Remove both screws.Once you remove it, you will see a rod. You have to have key In RUN and then line up rod on new switch and screw back into place. Then plug it in.

Step by Step Removal and Installation procedure:--------

REMOVAL
Disconnect battery ground cable.
Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover.
Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder to the RUN position.
Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch.
Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.
INSTALLATION
Adjust the ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the ignition switch RUN position.
NOTE: A new replacement ignition switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATIONS:-----

  • Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the RUN position. The RUN position is achieved by rotating the ignition switch lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the LOCK position.
  • Install the ignition switch pin into the actuator. It may be necessary to move the ignition switch slightly back and forth to align the ignition switch mounting holes with the lock cylinder housing threaded holes.
  • Install retaining screws. Tighten to 5.6 - 7.9 Nm (50 - 69 inch lbs.) .
  • Connect electrical connector to ignition switch.
  • Connect battery ground cable.
  • Check ignition switch for proper function, including START and ACC positions.
  • Also, make certain that the column is in the LOCK position.

Install lower instrument panel steering column cover with screws.

ALSO READ THIS PROCEDURE.
This procedure tells how to remove Ignition Switch Housing and Steering Column

The details to perform this task is as follows:----

To remove/replace steering column housing the steering column will have to be removed to do this task, and the air bag and steering wheel will also have to be removed.

The Housing replacing is a difficult job, so here are the replacement instructions.

REMOVAL
Center front wheels to the straight-ahead position.
Disconnect battery ground cable and positive battery cable. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.

WARNING: THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED BEFORE ANY AIR BAG COMPONENT IS SERVICED. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

See the help diagram shown below:----

IGNITION SWITCH HOUSING REMOVAL PROCEDURE CONTD......

Remove two cover caps from steering wheel back cover to driver side air bag module retaining bolts.
Remove two driver side air bag module retaining bolts and lift driver side air bag module off steering wheel.
Disconnect driver side air bag wire harness from driver side air bag module and remove driver side air bag module from steering wheel.
Remove and discard steering wheel retaining bolt.
Remove steering wheel from shaft using Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off of the steering column shaft.

CAUTION: Be sure air bag sliding contact wire harness does not get caught on wheel assembly when lifting steering wheel off steering column to avoid damage to air bag sliding contact.

NOW FOLLOW THE IGNITION SWITCH HOUSING INSTALLATION
Make sure front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel opening at the three o'clock position and position steering wheel on steering column. The steering wheel and steering column shaft alignment marks should be aligned.

CAUTION: Be sure air bag sliding contact wire is not pinched or air bag monitor will detect a fault.

Install new steering wheel retaining bolt and tighten to 34-46 Nm (26-33 ft. lbs.).
Connect air bag wire harness to driver side air bag module and install driver side air bag module to steering wheel. Tighten retaining bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-123 inch lbs). Install two steering wheel spoke covers.

CAUTION: Be sure wiring does not get trapped between steering wheel and air bag sliding contact assembly or air bag monitor will detect a fault.
Connect positive battery cable and battery ground cable.

Removal and Installation Procedure for
Steering Column

Removal:------

CAUTION: Do not remove steering wheel and driver side air bag module as an assembly unless the column is locked or the steering column shaft is secured to keep it from turning. This will avoid damage to the air bag sliding contact assembly. Disconnect battery ground cable. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.

Remove steering wheel as described.
Remove the bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to steering column lower yoke.
Remove two retaining screws from lower instrument panel steering column cover and remove cover.
Turn ignition switch lock cylinder to RUN position. Place a 3.17 mm (1/8-inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in hole in lower steering column shroud under ignition switch. Press retaining pin while pulling out on ignition switch lock cylinder to remove it from steering column lock cylinder housing.
Remove the lower steering column shroud and upper steering column shroud, fastened by three self-tapping screws.
On column shift models, unsnap and slide shift control selector lever boot up toward the end of the manual control lever.
Remove gearshift lever pin from manual control lever and remove lever from column.

NOTE: For vehicles equipped with overdrive lockout switch on manual control lever, disconnect wiring connector at bottom of steering column and remove wiring from column. Loosen ignition switch connector retaining screw from column and remove connector from ignition switch.

Disconnect horn and speed control connectors.
Disconnect air bag power supply connector.
Disconnect interlock switch connectors.
Remove screws retaining multi-function switch and position out of the way.
Remove shift indicator cable from shifter tube.
Remove screw securing shifter indicator retainer from column adjustment cable.
Remove two front nuts from instrument panel support bracket. Remove two rear nuts and carefully lower column down.

NOTE: On console shift models, remove interlock cable and actuator.
Remove column from vehicle and place on bench. Installation NOTE: On console-shift models, install lock cable and actuator.

Install two rear nuts and carefully raise column up. Install two front nuts to instrument panel support bracket.
Install screw securing shifter indicator retainer from column adjustment cable.
Install shift indicator cable from shifter tube.
Install screws retaining multi-function switch.
Reconnect interlock switch connectors.
Reconnect air bag power supply connector.
Reconnect horn and speed control connectors.

NOTE: For vehicles equipped with overdrive lockout switch on gearshift lever reconnect wiring connector at bottom of steering column and install wiring to column. Install connector to ignition switch and install ignition retaining screw.

Install gearshift lever and insert gearshift lever pin.
On column-shift models slide the shift control selector lever boot down the gearshift lever and snap in place.
Install the steering column shroud and fasten with three self-tapping screws.
With ignition switch lock cylinder in run position install lock cylinder into the steering column shroud.
Install instrument panel steering column cover with two retaining screws.
Install steering column intermediate shaft coupling to steering column lower yoke with the retaining bolt.
Install steering wheel.
Reconnect battery ground cable.
See the help diagrams shown below:----
