Chevrolet Engine cooling fan not running

Cooling fan not running on Chevy cavalier




The engine cooling fan not working causing engine to run hot, but fan does operate when defrost or a/c are used.

So i don't think fan is actually the issue.




UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM:----
The fan turns on when A/c or heater is turned ON, the engine temperature will sit where it is supposed to.
  I.E. it does not run hot as long as the fan is on.

 but if the A/c is not turned ON then fan will not come ON and engine overheats.

The fan turns on via air conditioning or via coolant temperature.

So its coming on with A/c and heater turned on,but not coming on when the coolant temperature gives the command.


The fan is controlled by same relay and same fuse to turn on,whether its by A/c or coolant temperature.

And now when we know that fan is running when command is from A/c so its clear that fuse and relays are working fine.

Both the ac position and the coolant temperature sensor sends signal to ECM(Computer) to turn on the fan, then the engine computer sends that signal to the relay


So now its confirmed that relay or fuse is extremely unlikely to be the issue

The problem is most probably the coolant temperature sensor, the alternative would be a faulty engine control module or faulty wiring between the coolant temperature sensor and the engine control module.


If you notice CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING UP ON DASH,then most likely its faulty coolant sensor.But if No check engine light then issue will be mostly the faulty ECM( Computer module).

Main radiator cooling fan is not working

Ford Cooling fan not working 



A/C fan runs but Engine cooling fan (the radiator one) is not running.

Ford Edge 2007 V6 model:

On most of such cases the problem is related to faulty cooling fan module.Its a costly part about $700 to $800.


But before getting the module directly replaced get the module tested first :----


The module is not getting a good ground and there is high resistance.Causing the module to fail.
The module is not getting good power and its running at lower volts than needed.
One of the fans has high resistance and is overheating the fan module.Can also short the fan module.

]What i suggest you to do is rewire the connections directly from 12 volt source.

Directly wire each fan separate to power and ground and use an ammeter on the wires to see if one fan is drawing more amps than the other.
Then OHM test your ground to the module while the fans are being used. Then voltage test the power while both fans are being used.

IMPORTANT NOTES THAT YOU FOLLOW WHILE PERFORMING THE TESTING:----




  • With both fans  running check the power at the fan module it should be  12.6 volts or near to that.This indicates that the fans are getting  required voltages power. If its very low then replace the wire.

  • Now again with both fan running  check the resistance to ground at the module. There should be no resistance to ground, if there is then replace the wire or check the wires connection to ground.



  • Main testing  rewire the fans directly to the battery.Because battery is main 12 volt source and fan needs basic 12 volt to function and run. After both are running and have been for a bit check the made power wire to see how many amps both fans are drawing. They should not be over 20 amps. If they are then the fan is bad.And has to be replaced.

Engine Cooling FAN NOT WORKING

Radiator fan not working


Chevy Cavalier Cooling fan not working


Fan will not run with A/C ON or Heater ON.




With no fan running  in ac or heat up its :


  • bad fan motor
  • bad relay
  • bad fuse
  • or bad ECM (computer module)


Fuse located under hood.Cooling fan fuse number 30 AMP.
To confirm the fault you need test-light

First i suggest you to remove the fan relay from under hood fuse box. Then turn key on. Now with the test light you need to probe the terminals. Need power on 2 of them. If no power? then fuse if power on 2? then possible relay.


Now reinset  relay in, get engine hot and turn ac on. 
Probe the light blue wire to fan. if power? bad fan motor. if no power? back to relay or even failed ECM.


so if relay is not problem, fan motor not problem, fuse is good then have to suspect bad ECM and yes., it can happen

Car Backfires

Causes and reasons for vehicle backfire

  • When excessive fuel in the exhaust hits a hot catalytic converter the engine backfires.
  • The spark occurring when the exhaust valve is open causes ignition backfire.
  • Combustion occurs when intake valve is open,vehicle backfires.
  • Leak in intake and exhaust manifold also causes backfire.

Actually what happens is when inlet valve and the exhaust valve are both partially open at the same time, un-burnt fuel escapes and get enter into the exhaust manifold. This ignites, causing a backfire.


Mostly on backfire issue you will noise a flame coming out from exhaust pipe.And also a heavy loud spark noise from same area.

Its like something got stuck up in the lines and to clear the clog,the engine backfires.

The vehicle will loose power and will won't run in forward direction.
Or will run but make loud noise.


Backfire results due to malfunctions related to the air to fuel ratio.
On both engine models you will notice back fire.
Fuel oriented and carb oriented.
If a engine running lean backfire will be noticed on  carbureted engines.
It occurs due to the air-fuel mixture has insufficient fuel or whenever the timing is too advanced. 

There is one stage where the actual backfire is no caused, and you notice a MISFIRE. These stage is called as incomplete combustion.
What actually happens in incomplete combustion is engine runs leaner or if there is less time for the fuel to burn in the combustion chamber. The condition that causes this is a misfire. 
These misfire creates chances of backfire.
Now when misfire occurs the unburned fuel or flammable hydrocarbons are delivered to the exhaust manifold where they may ignite unpredictably. And you notice backfire from engine.

Sometimes backfire is noticed  when the engine is running rich (with excess fuel) and there is incomplete combustion and same misfire gets created and that too results in bacfire.



Exhaust system backfires issues :----


  • Engine with emission system malfunction causes backfire.
Emission system malfunctions   
  • Air injection system diverter valve problem
  • Or it can be an exhaust leak.
  • Or on some cases when the catalytic converter has removed. 


Now on  high-performance vehicles:-----


When the vehicle gears are shifted up and accelerator is left off, at that time  the engine has a moment of running rich.Now due to the vehicle running rich overfuel gets entered into system.Due to these more then required fuel  incomplete burn of fuel occurs and this causes the fumes to explode in the exhaust system and also popping sound is heard. 

Fuel-injected engine backfire:-----

The engine may backfire if an intake leak is present.The intake leak causing the engine to run lean.
Also if  air-flow sensor is defective the engine runs lean.Due to lack of required fuel the backfire issues are noticed.
The fuel proportion should be exactly same as required,not less or not much.
So as air flow sensor being fuel injection component,if its faulty you notice the engine backfire issues.


The Very Common causes of  Engine backfires are:

Poor engine timing  cause intake backfires and also exhaust backfires
Ignition wiring misaligned lead to timing issues and timing issues lead to backfires

Fuel pressure getting very low causes backfire.
Fuel filter worn out clogged with dust causes backfire.
A fuel pump when gets old,it will not let the fuel to run as per required flow,these also causes back fires.  A lean air-to-fuel ratio during fuel injection causes backfire
A faulty catalytic converter can result in backfires out the exhaust tailpipe.


So as you can majorly see the issue with fuel system,air filter and catalytic converter causes most of the engine backfire issues.Backfires can occur when car not tuned properly for the application as well as just having mechanical valve failure.
If the valve timing is thrown off or the valves not seating properly .These cause fuel  push back up past the intake valve during ignition. While there can be more things that cause a backfire, these are just a few.

Getting your vehicle properly serviced on time and engine tune up done regularly as recommended by service manual helps to keep your vehicle trouble-free.

Car: Vibrating Front End

Car vibrates at  the speed of 50 mph while driving.

It can be the issue of tire balance or brakes.
Can be faulty worn out wheel bearings on  tires.

Tire balance problems generally create a vibration at a specific speed that will fade away or even out as vehicle speed changes, above or below a specified speed. Having the tires balanced will most likely correct the problem.

Try these,

With the transmission in Park, turn the steering wheel to the left and to the right.

No inspect --------- Is the steering any different when turning to the left or right when doing this? ---------

You will notice the motor moves quit a bit when pushing the car forward or backwards


It is normal for the engine to move when pushing the car forward or backward in Park. If it moves excessively, check the top mounts from engine to radiator support.
Also it can be issue with front hubs,get it inspected.

Now test when you notice vibration.Only while taking turns to left or right or you also notice vibration when moving on straight road too.

If you notice vibration while turning left,then inspect left wheel.If you notice vibrating while turning right then inspect right wheel.
If you notice vibration while only turning and not on straight road then its not wheel bearing issue.Its transaxle issue.But it has to be confirmed.

If it only vibrates with the wheels turning then it is not in the front wheel bearings and not in the tires, the problem has to be either in a drive axle or in the transmission itself.

At our auto repair garage our Mechanics will typically use a tool called Chassis Ears. This tool has microphones that you can attach to various components and listen from the drivers seat to help pinpoint a noise while driving.
As per our vehicle repair experience it seems that CV joints will not typically make noise unless the boot has been compromised and the grease has leaked out of the joint. that you can visually inspect and confirm.
As per my suggestion i recommend you to get the vehicle introspected by  transmission shop, as they may be able to test drive the vehicle and tell you whether the noise is emanating from the transaxle. Or its somewhere else the noise is coming from.

Car Battery Leak

Battery drained overnight on vehicle.

Replaced the battery but still the problem is same with new battery.

How the new battery can drain with ignition turned OFF


I will say these problems are very rare,but when it occurs tracing the faulty is many a times very difficult.
Here in these chapter i would like to share our garage Parasitic Battery drain incidences:------

First of all , see any thing can be faulty causing parasitic drain or battery drain overnight issues.

Its not like one common fault in every case.

------------
So once you go through few of such cases then you come to know that where exactly to look to confirm the fault of battery getting drained with ignition turned off.

CASE 1:

In these particular case traced the battery drain to the 40 amp master fuse for the air conditioner.

Had a VW jetta do the same thing, AC relay stuck in closed position, allowing constant current flow to AC clutch. replaced this relay and voltage draw no longer there. relay has battery power without key on.

CASE 2:

These issue was noticed on Ford Expedition vehicle./

I suggest you to remove each fuse from the fuse slot one by one and see if the Darin issue stops.


Try removing each  fuses and you will come to know  that the drain greatly diminishes when fuse #5 or any other fuse is removed.
On these particular case removing fuse #5 cleared the battery drain issue.

The circuit this fuse protects, controls a whole bunch of things--PCM, Speed control deactivation switch, Manual climate control mode switch,Brake shift interlock solenoid, EATC control head, Body Security Module, Speed control servo, Security lock LED.


The next step is going to be to disconnect one component at a time to see which one causes the battery draw to stop. As soon as you do this, you will know which direction to take next. Either that module or component is bad or that module or component is staying awake for another reason and will need to be looked into further.

On these particular PCM was faulty causing the Parasitic battery drain


The PCM is mounted on the fire wall on the passenger side under the hood.

It will have a tone of wires going to in and about 3 or 4 big connectors that plug right into it.
Replacing the module helped to clear the battery drain issue.

CASE 3:



Mercedes-Benz Parasitic drain issue


Can be anything but on these similar case found that it was instrument cluster causing the problem causing battery to drain.

Two wires under the cluster panel were getting interconnected causing the battery to drain.

This wire was for engine compartment fuse box,and due to this battery was getting automatically discharged.




To confirm these issues on your vehicle is suggest you,
Try to disconnect the instrument cluster first and see if there is still battery draw with ignition off.

if this does not help, then you will have to start disconnecting each module until draw is gone.
Yes i agree its time consuming,but thats the only procedure to confirm which component is causing the problem.

Chevrolet K1500 No spark,random misfire

Fault noticed on Chevy silverado, No spark and random misfire.
Distributor and timing chain replaced.
Coil is absolutely new.

On such case i suggest test the basics:-----



Suppose if you remove the distributor cap and turn the engine.
does the rotor turn?
is this why you got the new distributor?or ,did it run with this distributor?
Do you have a spark on the coil wire from the coil?

TEST THIS POSSIBILITIES FIRST:


When the distributor is faulty,many a times you get error codes related to faulty cam shaft sensor and crank shaft sensor


If there is no spark out of the coil... then i suggest problem is with ignition module.

The red wire to the coil,,,it should have battery voltage with the key on.That is 12 volt.
If not, then the problem may be the with ignition switch..check that,,if so,,lets check that new coil.

IGNITION COIL TEST

How to test ignition coil.


Here we have mentioned procedure for Chevy silverado vehicle.

The procedure to test ignition coil will be same for other vehicles too,just the difference will be wire colors.

Its very much possible that ignition switch is faulty,but if ignition switch is tested ok,then yes ignition coil is faulty and it causes issues like no spark on vehicle.



To confirm ignition switch is working properly test the red wire to the coil,,,it should have battery voltage with the key on.if not,,the problem is ignition switch.
If the 12 volt is present on red wire then problem is ignition coil and not the switch.

This test procedure should be confirmed to test the coil:-----


IGNITION COIL TEST
^ Make sure the ignition switch is "OFF."

1. Disconnect the distributor lead and wiring from the ignition coil.

CAUTION: Do not Insert the J 39200 probe into the ignition coil connectors. The female terminals could be spread and deformed, resulting In intermittent operation of the coil. Be sure to make contact with only the front edge of the terminals.

2. Connect an ohmmeter as shown in Figure, step 1. Use the high scale. The reading should be infinite. If not, replace the coil.
3. Connect the ohmmeter as shown in Figure, step 2. Use the low scale. The reading should be 0.2 - 0.5 ohms. If not, replace the coil.
4. Connect the ohmmeter as shown in Figure, step 3. Use the high scale. The meter should read 5k - 25k ohms. If not, replace the coil.
5. Reconnect the distributor lead and wiring to the coil.

If everything checks out to be perfectly ok,then problem is not the coil and fault is elsewhere.

But if the ignition switch is checked ok and problem is No spark then either is faulty spark plug or its issue with Ignition coil.

On some rare cases the issue is with cam sensor and crank sensor.

2009 Ford 4 Way Flasher Not working

2009 Ford F750 turn signals work fine...function switch..relay 


Four way flasher not working but turn signal working fine .


On such cases mostly the problem is multifunction switch or the issue is with faulty flasher relay.


If all test ok,then wiring's needs to be checked for hazard switch and its lamps to sockets.

Nissan Path Finder 2002 Both Turn Signals and Flasher not working at all.

As per the problem there is possibility of few cases.

Either is faulty blown fuses or its faulty hazard switch or its issue with Flasher unit and it has to be replaced.

First check the Fuse number 12 and Fuse number 20 inside the Truck fuse box.

Are these fuse working or blown.If they look burned out or dirty sticky there.Just remove the fuse clean that fuse area slot and replace it with new sets of fuse in there.

But fuses look ok,then it can be faulty hazard switch,get at the back of the hazard switch and there you will see orange and red/yellow wires for power.
With the key on,test the voltages at those two wires,if you see 12 volts there that means switch is receiving power.But if there is no power on that wires,that means the switch is not receiving power from fuse slot.Test voltage at the fuse slot for power.You will have to test at the fuse number 12 and Fuse number 20 slot for power.
7.5 amp fuse #12 in the fuse box inside the truck. That is where the power comes from for the red/yellow wire.

But if you get power at those two wires that is orange wire and red/yellow wire,these confirms that switch is faulty and supply is not the problem.
Replacing the hazard switch will solve the problem.But still before replacing the switch.I suggest you to check and test the switch wires too.

In that case check for power on the brown/white wire coming out of the hazard switch. If there is no power the hazard switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

PLEASE NOTE:----
When the hazard switch is ON,you will not receive voltage at Hazard switch Brown/white wire.But when Hazard switch is OFF you will see 12 volts there on that brown/white wire.
If that is the case then Hazard switch is OK and problem is at flasher unit.

The Working is as follows:----
They run power through the hazard switch to the flasher unit for the turn signals. 


Suppose if hazard switch is faulty then replacing the switch will help.

But if hazard switch is receiving proper power but still turn signals and flasher not working then its problem with flasher unit.
On your vehicle model Nissan the flasher is located under the dash and has 3 wires going to it. One black,one green, and one brown/white.
On these wires check for power out of the green wire and power on the brown/white wire.There should be power on both with the key on and the hazard switch off.
You should receive 12 volts,if not then flasher unit is faulty and has to be replaced.

The turn signals stopped working for both directions. 
4- way flasher still works - 
When you activate Flasher function you can hear the flasher module clicking on a regular cycle and the 4 lights go on and off normally. 

But the actual problem is noticed here,that is when  the turn signal arm is moved for either a left or right hand turn, there is no sound from the flasher module and the turn lights do not flash. 


The Flasher unit not working or turn signal not working.
Most commonly when such problem occur the problem is related to faulty Switch.

I suggest get the turn signal switch checked and inspected,the problem is mostly the switch.
The most common thing I see with turn signals not working is the switch for turn signals the contacts get worn and quit working.


Because if Hazards are working as already mentioned,then its not case of faulty Flasher unit,but only turn signal lights not working,these clears that problem is related to faulty switch.

The switch is located under steering column covers with 2 screws that hold it in . this is a dealer only part , Yes there are some aftermarket switch parts available at local auto parts,but there performance is not up-to the mark.on some cases it just don't last even for single day.

If both hazards and turn signal not working,then we would have opted for faulty fuse issue.But Hazards and turn signals are working on same fuse,so fuse getting blown in these case is not possible.
